I’ve been taking Proscar cut into quarters for almost 4 years, following a FUE ht, and everything had been going well since then.
This May, I started to notice that my hair was generally looking thinner (even on the sides), I could see my scalp more than usual on the top of my head, and the overall appearance of my hair had worsened.
One day, I happened to look at the Proscar box and realized it had expired in March 2025. OMG.
That means I had been using expired medication throughout April and May.
As soon as I realized, I immediately started a new box, that was about 20 days ago.
I did some research and found that there are no health risks, but what I haven’t been able to figure out is what might have happened in terms of effectiveness. Is it possible that this decline (which is still ongoing) is caused by that?
Assuming a drug doesn’t lose its potency overnight, maybe it was still working for like a month after the expiration date.
But what about the second month, was it basically like taking sugar pills? Could that be the reason for the worsening?
If it’s true that taking expired Finasteride was like stopping it for a month, will I recover what I lost now that I’ve started again?
I hope it just be a seasonal shedding though
Taking expired fin probably reduced its effectiveness but wasn’t like stopping it cold turkey. Now that you’re back on fresh fin, your hair should improve, but it could take several months to notice a change. Seasonal shedding might also be a factor. Keep an eye on it and give it time to stabilize.
