Topical finasteride carrier/vehicle

Wishing to make my own homemade topical fin and looking for ethanol-based carriers in the UK.

Would this solution be appropriate for the ethanol component?

Ingredients: Partially denatured ethyl alcohol 96 - 99.9% w/w; benzalkonium chloride - 0.1% w/w

Many thanks!

That would work but might be drying and irritating with the ethanol and benzalkonium chloride. Looks inexpensive enough to try. If you have problems, there are some other formulas out there with ethanol and glycerin, and of course ethanol with propylene glycol.

Sorry I should have mentioned, I would use this just as the ethanol component.

Would be making a formulation of 80% ethanol and 20% glycerin and wanted to know if this would work for the ethanol component

Ahh ok

Where did you get that ratio from, 80/20?

I would personally err on caution and look for something without benzalkonium chloride. You want to deliver the drug to your skin without nuking the natural flora on your scalp and hair.

I’ve just seen that as a standard ratio people use whether alcohol/pg or alcohol/glycerin.

Thanks for the tip, would 99% isopropyl alcohol work instead of ethanol? I see conflicting opinions on this

Probably fine. The numbers I remember are 50-70% alcohol, 5-20% glycerin, 10-30% distilled water. Dissolve fin in alcohol then combine with the rest. Less glycerin for less sticky feel or faster absorption.

Great thank you. I hear ethanol is preferred but it seems very hard to get non denatured ethanol here in the U.K.

Do you know if PG is better for less ‘sticky’ feel?

Yes I think glycerin is greasier from what I remember. PG is more popular in most topicals. Perhaps consider a test with both and report back on your findings. We’re all making it up as we go
