Struggling with Balding at 21: Seeking Advice on Implants and Self-Image

I made a similar post on r/bald, but I would like to get your opinion aswell. Bald is an option, but if don’t get used to it, would it be possible to regrow my hairline without implants ?

My situation

I’ve shaved my head about a month ago, but I’m still unsure about it. I’m currently buzzing it at one guard (4-5 mm), but I don’t like how far gone my hairline is, especially from the sides. I’ve gotten used to it in the mirror, but I really don’t like the look in photos and videos. Pics 4 and 5 are from a video I shot today that made me go into full panic mode (I get obsessed). Basically: it felt wrong to me.

I think that fully shaving my scalp could solve this problem, but then I’m unsecured about my head shape. I feel like my forehead is enormous. Besides, my family strongly opposes it by saying it would be “hideous”. I don’t have a bad relationship with my parents at all, but it is to be taken into consideration since I live with them (partly moving out in a few months).

I also worry 21 is simply too young to be bald or to embrace a receding hairline (my current situation). I’m not an overly confident person, although I’ve grown a lot. I’m working on it, but I think that being bald (without a cap) in public at my age would feel off… Is hiding it much better thought? I just fear I’ll make me unappealing to people my age…

My request, if you may

I need HONEST opinions because I don’t want to trust myself: I may have developed body dysmorphia.

One last consideration: I’ve never liked my hair and I wonder if implants or a wig could even fix that. I wear a cap most of the time, it’s only while wearing one that I feel myself, and I have no doubts it suits me well. The thing is: with my current haircut, I feel like I’m hiding something (and I kinda am). At the same time, I worry shaving the sides will make it look worse with a hat on…

Anyway, I’m waiting on what you’ll have to say. Thank you to everyone who will be responding !

Going fully bald or keeping the buzz are solid choices for managing appearance. If you want to explore hair regrowth, consider fin with min. For maintaining transplanted hair long-term, meds like fin/min are needed. More details on treatments are in The Beginner’s Guide. If buzzing isn’t working for you now, it might later; experimenting is fine. Hair systems can be an option too, but they take some getting used to.
