Starting finasteride before dermatologist (I’ll explain)

Context: 19M, noticed hair loss at mid 18, considerable crown loss and visible density loss, from hairline to mid scalp, and even a bit of retrograde I think. Doctor did labs and no deficiencies whatsoever, but I hopped on Vit D and B12 in case. Doctor says highly likely MPB, referred me to a derm, but appointment is in 2 months.

I got prescribed finasteride by a Telehealth company online after a consultation where I showed photos of my hair loss pattern, said it looked consistent MPB, delivered to my place so I have it but yet to start.

I am noticing that I am losing more ground in the past month, not sure if it’s TE or accelerated MPB. Lifestyle quite poor so that needs an improvement.

I’ve done considerable research, but I’m still not 100% if I should start. I will also start weightlifting and taking DIM/Zinc to offset E2 sides, and start 0.25mg MWF is this a good idea? Do you think my derm would appreciate this?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

earlier the better, with a doc’s advice you should hop on that shit as early as possible. doesn’t matter who prescribed it to you if he/she is legally a doc. telehealth or not. as long as you have mpb you will need finasteride, since mpb is genetic it thus is chronic of a treatment. take it 25-30 years until when hair loss will not be of your concern. source a 20 year old. btw, ask about dutasteride to that derm once you meet with him/her with appointment, dut imho is better for young hair loss but don’t get on that shit without a doctor’s advice. if you are unsure whether it is te or mpb, believe that it is mpb and hope that it is te. thus get on fin if prescribed. believe always in the worst case scenario. and no your question is also not stupid, very valid. go for 0.25 MWF then up the dose to 0.5 MWF (ASK A DOC FIRST THOUGH, on upping the dosage.) (eg. with 1 week for each to test the waters) then go for 1mg propecia, standard dose for hair loss. anything over 1 mg has no substantial benefit, don’t hop on 5mg proscar just because it has more miligrams of finasteride per pill. also don’t take supplements if you have no deficincies, that is not good at all, there is a reason supplements exist, eg. you lack vit D and get on vit D. when everything is good, it is unnecessary especially against AGA (mpb) which has NOTHING to do with you taking vit D supplements. It solely is due to DHT and your follicles’ relevant sensitivity to it. I divide proscar to 1/4-1/5, as it is cheaper but propecia 1mg is better if you can find it for cheap there. dht is a poor anabolic so has little to do with weight lifting, in fact more you lift weight less will be the estrogen, less will the chance of gynocomastia be. but more testosterone the more you lift may be a concern, you may get a testosterone test (blood) and see an endocrinologist perhaps, given you can afford. a 15 year old that was here in tressless said they were not cheap in us, but who am i to know.

Yo thanks a lot for the long and detailed response! You said you are 20? When did you start taking finasteride? Are you on dut? Experience any sides whatsoever?

I’m taking supplements in the small chance that it is due to a nutritional deficiency, causing hair fall. MY b12 was within reference range but on the very low end. Vitamin D was not tested but doctor recommended going on 2000IU a day.

I have propecia, it isn’t the cheapest but I’m planning to take 0.5mg daily MAX (after slowly upping dosage) anyways cuz most derms even now say that the DHT suppression is similar. BTW I am also considering topical finasteride (0.02%). Do you think I should go for that? Problem my hair is medium length and I like to keep it that way, idk if topical would work as well. Oral easier for sure but more systemic.

Regarding the testosterone and estrogen levels, yes that’s why I’m planning on taking DIM and Zinc which are VERY mild aromatase inhibitors. Hormone tests are expensive. I currently go to uni in Canada and it’s like 300 CAD or sth. But better safe than sorry honestly.

1)I have no sides from fin/dut, 2)I have been taking them for 40 days roughly, 3)oral finasteride is better than topical all day every day if you have no sides. 4)hormones other than dht has nothing to do with balding, testosterone is androgen and can activate androgen receptors that cause balding on scalp but it is too weak compared to dht, dht is the main curse.
