Should I Start Finasteride and Minoxidil with Minimal Hair Loss and Mental Health Concerns?

I recently went to a new hairdresser, and he told me about finasteride and minoxidil. I bought a 6‑month treatment before really learning how they work.

Now I’m wondering if I should actually start the treatment or if my hair loss isn’t that bad yet. I’ve learned that I’m supposed to apply minoxidil to my whole scalp except where I put finasteride. I think I should use finasteride only on my hairline, but I’m not sure if I should apply it only right along the hairline or also further back into the frontal area. I also know that for some people finasteride and minoxidil don’t work, and can even make them lose more hair. Right now, when I brush my hair or take a shower, there’s basically no hair on my comb or in the drain.

I also have a family history of mental health issues, so I don’t want to try oral finasteride.
I haven’t started any treatment yet.

If your hair loss is minimal, you might want to hold off on starting treatment unless you’re seeing progression. Minoxidil is generally applied to the entire thinning area. Since you’re concerned about mental health, you might consider using topical treatments only, like minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoo, to avoid potential systemic effects from fin.
