Male, 5 Years of Recession, Starting Oral Minoxidil & Microneedling - Advice Needed

So I’m about to hop on meds after 5 years of denial.

I originally went to a dermatologist about getting on meds two years ago and they said get on minox but when I asked “will it cause a shed?” They said no. When i asked if it will affect my cat they said “he should be fine”. Felt like I knew more information than they did.

I also was just going to try and stop vaping because I had a hunch the loss of blood flow to the scalp from nicotine wasn’t helping but it seems I am unable to stop as of right now so time to start meds instead.

I have recession on the temples and then some diffuse thinning. Particularly bad on the left side of my hairline.

I was originally going to do the foam minox but I don’t wanna risk hurting my cat so I was thinking about doing the hims minox plus fin pill plus microneedling. I know hims is a rip off but a pill for both fin and min seems easy to commit to and it seems like an easy way to get oral minox.

I also originally wanted to put just foam minox on my face to grow hair on my cheeks as I have a pretty solid jawline beard right now but I care about my hair more than my beard and maybe oral min will help with that even though I am taking fin as well.

I’ve always been afraid of the dread shed with minox because so far no one can tell I’m thinning besides maybe when it’s windy or super sunny. The fact that I can’t get my entire head wet at the lake sucks. Plus I’m afraid I’ll lose more ground and one of these days when I get my haircut it will become noticeable.

Any advice or things I’m missing or am I good to just say fuck it and give it a try?

Oral min can be a solid choice, especially if you’re aiming to avoid disturbing your cat. Microneedling can also boost the effectiveness of min. Keep in mind that oral min works more systemically compared to topical. The ‘dread shed’ is normal and usually settles as the hair adjusts. Check The Beginner’s Guide for more insights. You can also find options at the product finder for oral min. Good luck!
