Is oral + topical minoxidil too much?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using Kirkland 5% foam minoxidil for about 4 months. I’ve seen some early signs of progress, but I know it’s still pretty early to judge. I have a big forehead and early-stage alopecia, so I’ve decided to go through with a hair transplant (mainly to lower the hairline and thicken the front). It’s scheduled for next month.

The surgeon gave me these pills to take before the transplant:

  • Oral finasteride 1mg (daily)
  • Oral minoxidil 1mg (daily)
  • Topical minoxidil 7% spray every night ( and stop kirkland 5%)
  • A daily antioxidant pill
  • Collagen (after lunch)
  • A multivitamin

I’m supposed to pause everything for a month after the transplant, then resume.

My question is mainly about the oral minoxidil
Since I’m already using topical, is the oral really necessary before the transplant? I’ve read about possible heart side effects and I’m a bit hesitant. I’m slim (60kg at 1.76m) and don’t have any blood pressure issues, do have some anxiety issues, so I’m cautious about adding oral min without clear need.

oral min has systemic effects and can be stronger than topical. If you’re worried about side effects, it’s understandable to be hesitant. Oral min’s known for off-label hair loss use but has roots as a blood pressure med, which means it can affect your cardiovascular system. If the topical’s working and you’re seeing progress, it might be fine to discuss any necessity of oral min with your surgeon, especially with your concerns about side effects.
