I’m in my early 20s (I’ll avoid saying my actual age). My hairline had been receding and at this point I’m getting a little worried. It hasn’t changed much recently but I think it might be receding a little over time to the point I cant notice. I have my hairfall under control and do not lose too many on a daily bases. Even when I shower I’ll lose what I guess is an ok amount. Although there have been some bad periods in the past when i lost quite a bit. I would say it has thinned a little over time.
Edit: Forgot to mention I have a little bit of dandruff along the sides on my head, but it’s not much at all. A little come out when I comb my hair and if basically gone after I wah my hair.
At this point I think it might he better to start sooner than later so I can avoid regret on the future. I was thinking topical minoxidil, but though it better to check. Any advice as to what I should do and start and what effect it may have even any side effects?
Happy to answer more questions in the comments. Here are some photos. In order: right, middle, left.
Starting topical min is a good choice for keeping hair you have and maybe thickening it up. It might cause some shedding at first, which is normal. For the dandruff, consider using ketoconazole shampoo, it could help with both dandruff and hair thinning. If you want more detailed options, the Beginner’s Guide has good info. Stick with it for a while, treatments can take up to a year to show effects. CBD with MCT oil can help with dandruff, too. Keep in mind, min is the fertilizer; it helps nourish and maintain hair.
Would I apply minoxidil to my whole head or just the parts where my hair line is receding? I have heard that its recommended to apply 1ml in morning and night, but I dont think I have enough area to cover for that if im just doing the front. I’ll take a look at the shampoo and probably microneedling too. Also should I look into fin or is it too early?
Is it better to start minoxidil or fin first. I have heard that its not a good idea to start both at the same time. I was thinking of starting min and then seeing how to goes for a couples months and then looking into fin
yes I got it right. no, attack with all your force provided you experience no side effects. permanent telogen is not something you want to experiment with. hair follicles going dormant and entering permanent telogen is a risk you take waiting for finasteride to work while not using the minoxidil. if you just use minoxidil then the DHT will ravage the follicles in the long run anyways, so you would have to use fin anyways or shave it off. hair loss is more similar to a sprint than a marathon in the context of saving hair follicles, keep that in mind.
Attack with all your force if you have no sides to speak of and got prescribed both. Period. Finasteride + Minoxidil > Either of the two, almost always.
Whoever tells you otherwise should shut up even if he/she is a doctor, period. If you have no sides, you must be aggressive in the fight against hair loss. Bring all the weaponry in.
Don’t listen to @Henryk, he is a very optimistic person and likely has a good chunk of hair. Premature androgenetic alopecia had taught me to be as aggressive and pessimistic as possible. You are on your path to norwood 3, but see a doctor for definite assesment as always. Maybe it won’t progress and is just a “mature hairline”.
I would suggest you to consider under the guidance of a doctor 1) microneedling/tretinoin 2)intermittent dutasteride eg. Monday Wednesday Friday 3)topical spironolactone, microneedling/tretinoin boosts minoxidil’s effectiveness, dutasteride 2-3 times a week with finasteride 4-5 times a week is better than finasteride every day to my knowledge and the topical spironolactone is to my knowledge safest anti-androgen even if not very potent, it would probably help some.
This text is not a medical advice and avoid microneedling at the very least on the same day with minoxidil if possible. Perhaps for even a greater timeframe, consult a doctor for that regard.
