Cycle of Hair Loss: Fin to Dut Transition without Improvement

Started losing my hair at 20 and got diagnosed with MPB. About 2.5 years ago I started on 1.25mg fin + topical min twice a day.

First 5 months were great, my hair got noticeably thicker and fuller. But after that, it started shedding again. I thought it was just a second shed, but it never really stopped.

Since then it’s been like this constant cycle: slight improvement, then even worse loss. Overall trend is clearly downhill.

About a year ago I switched from fin to 0.5mg dut, hoping it would stabilize things, but honestly nothing changed. Still losing ground steadily.

Got my bloodwork done, vitamins, etc. everything looks normal.

I’m not getting any side effects, but I also don’t want to increase my dut dose.

At this point I’ve seen multiple dermatologists and none of them really had anything useful to say.

Anyone else been through something like this? What did you do?

You should go on https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/ and ask them actually hair physicians and surgeons will answer you but I would say if all else fails and you can’t figure out why maybe think about a scalp biopsy. You should ask them tho don’t take my word om just letting go you know about it.

Dutasteride and fin primarily stop loss but rarely significantly grow a lot more hair. To grow more hair now you have stopped the cause (lowering dht) you need an aggressive growth stimulant which oral minoxidol is. Topical never worked for me and is a pain to put on every day but oral minoxidol is a great hair growth stimulant but you need to consult a doc/derm to monitor your dosing. Taking extra dutasteride in my opinion will not do much other than cause more side effects and 0.5 pretty much wipes out most of your dht. Sublingual minoxidol is also in my opinion better than oral as side effects are less and you can take higher doses. If you want a topical after everything above then stemoxydine hits hair loss at another angle but would not replace min with stem. You need to take all 3 for best outcomes. Finally you need to be patient and give it at least 2-3 years. If you are not committed for this time frame then I would do nothing. If you wait and can be patient then the top 3 will eventually work really well if you actually have MPB.
