I am a trans woman, and I am experiencing hair loss. I’m 23 years old, and I want to avoid baldness. My hair is already very thin, and I’m worried. What should I do? I would like to know if cyproterone, which is an antiandrogen, will help me with the hair loss, or if I should take dutasteride instead. In addition, I’d like to know if oral minoxidil will cause hair growth on my face, chest, or legs… I do laser hair removal in those areas and currently don’t have hair there, but I don’t want to waste all the money I’ve spent and see the hair come back after years because of the medication. Please help me.
Note: I’m thinking of taking some compounded medication on my own from somewhere.
cyproterone can help. dut might also be effective because it blocks DHT. oral min can cause hair regrowth on the body, so consider using topical min to avoid that. Try searching Tressless for these subjects, for example Search for cyproterone in community - Tressless
@Brenn Hi! welcome to the forum. I’ll initially say that yes, Cyproterone Acetate (CPA) should be able to help you. It will lower your T, which means the 5ar will not be able to convert much of anything to DHT. DO NOT take more than 12.5mg. Usually, CPA comes in 50mg pills. You’ll need a pill cutter to cut the pill into fourths. A fourth of a pill (12.5mg) a day should be good.
That said, may I know your current regimen, and your hormone levels from your last blood test? This will help me give you better advice.
As for oral minoxidil, I do not recommend it for trans women. It is difficult to predict its effects on unwanted hairs. If you’re on topical minoxidil, stay on it. If you’re not on topical minoxidil, I would advise you not to get on it YET[1]. Let’s see your hormone levels first, and see if you recover hair, and then if you still want additional hair thickness, topical minoxidil would be good.
[1] The reason for this is that once you get on topical minoxidil, it’s a lifelong thing, otherwise you lose everything you gained solely on minoxidil. And having min in your routine can be quite inconvenient. So if you’re able to recover enough hair such that you are satisfied, then it’s best if you avoid minoxidil altogether. Only use it when you don’t have a choice.
