43M Considering Alternatives to Minoxidil and Finasteride for Frontal Hair Thinning

43M.

Past 6 months have noticed the mid/frontal scalp is thinning.. First time in my life so far I’ve started to notice some hair loss.

I’ve looked into the min/fin meds and although in a perfect world I’d quite readily try topical min and oral fin, few things holding me back:

  • I have a small beloved dog who yes sleeps on the bed, sometimes against my pillow. Min is extremely toxic and I just don’t think I’d be comfortable taking that risk..

  • Oral fin, I have somewhat of man boobs already, not true gynocomastia I believe, but I tend to store fat there it seems. I know technical risk is small, but it definitely seems it happens on Fin, so any chance of worsening man boobs is worse to me than hair loss right now haha.

Would topical fin and oral min be a reasonable strategy?

Just try microneedling by itself?

Other ideas?

Thanks

Topical fin and oral min could be a good combo. Topical fin might have fewer side effects and oral min is quite potent. If you’re worried about min’s toxicity, just be careful where you apply it. Microneedling alone probably won’t cut it without other treatments. You could also try topical dutasteride. Check the Beginner’s Guide for some more insights.
