29M Massive density loss in just 18 days while on Finasteride and Minoxidil for years. I'm desperate

Hi everyone’,

I am 29 and I’m looking for some opinions because I’m honestly feeling very depressed and hopeless right now.

I’ve been taking Finasteride daily for 3 years and using topical Minoxidil for 4 years.

I’ve been very consistent with Finasteride and the treatment had been working extremely well for about 1.5 years. My hair density was the best it had been in years, and everything seemed stable until late May / early June.

However, since the beginning of June, I’ve experienced what feels like a massive loss of density in just a few weeks.

The first photo was taken on June 3rd, 2026 and the second one was taken today (June 21st, 2026).

That’s only 18 days apart, yet my hair looks dramatically thinner.

And just to be clear: I did NOT cut my hair on top at all. The visible difference is only due to hair loss, not a haircut. I’ve simply lost a lot of hair and curls over the past 2–3 weeks.

I have curly hair but it is realy worse when it is wet.

A few things that may or may not be relevant:

I switched to a different Minoxidil brand in February 2026.

I switched to a different Finasteride brand in March 2026.

I know the active ingredients are supposed to be identical, so in theory this shouldn’t matter, but I’m starting to have doubts.

The treatments had been working very well before all of this happened.

I’m still shedding hairs every day and my density seems to keep getting worse.

Do you think this could be:

A shed caused by changing brands ?

A delayed Minoxidil-related shed ?

Telogen effluvium ?

Seasonal shedding ?

Or is this simply androgenetic alopecia progressing despite treatment ?

One thing worth mentioning is that I may have been slightly less consistent with Minoxidil over the past few months, but I was still using it every single day, and on average twice daily about 5 days out of 7 each week. I wasn’t stopping treatment or taking long breaks.

Because of that, I don’t really think this level of density loss can be explained solely by my Minoxidil usage, but I’m mentioning it for completeness in case anyone has had a similar experience.

Has anyone experienced such a rapid drop in density while remaining on Finasteride and Minoxidil ?

I’m genuinely struggling mentally with this because it happened so fast after a long period of stability, and I feel like I’ve lost a huge amount of progress in only a few weeks and it is getting worse day by day.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

It might be due to changing brands, even though the active ingredient is the same. If the consistency of min has been variable, that could also play a role, as missing days might lead to increased shedding. TE or seasonal shedding are also possible. Stick to a strict routine, and consider tracking any other potential changes in your health or lifestyle. If new brands don’t stabilize, looking into formulation differences might be key. Thanks a lot for your response, I really appreciate it.

The thing is, I’ve been using minoxidil for about 4 years now, and I honestly don’t think I was significantly less consistent in 2026 compared to 2024 or 2025. In the end, I used all my minoxidil bottles within the expected timeframe, so I don’t think I was taking a lower-than-recommended dose, or at least nothing truly significant — especially after being on minoxidil for so many years.

I also saw my dermatologist yesterday. I’ve known him since I was a kid as he’s a family friend. He examined my scalp and told me I had around 3 hairs per follicular unit, which he said was very good. He also said that changing finasteride brands shouldn’t make any difference. For minoxidil, he said it’s possible but that normally it shouldn’t make much difference either. Overall, he told me my hair will probably grow back.

I’ve experienced fairly rapid density losses before, especially in 2023 and 2024 during the summer. It was very frustrating, but my hair eventually recovered.

Right now, though, I’ve basically gone back to the hair density I had about two years ago. Between the photo from my previous post and today, I’ve lost even more density and length and it’s not over..

The strange thing is that my hairline hasn’t changed at all. That’s what’s making this whole situation so confusing.

According to my dermatologist, this doesn’t look like androgenetic alopecia progression. So whay ? Shedding event, a telogen effluvium, or possibly something related to the minoxidil brand change, although he wasn’t convinced that should normally make a major difference either.

What’s really frustrating is that I’ve always disliked my hairline. It’s naturally high and asymmetrical, but I was able to hide it when my hair was longer and denser. Now, with this sudden loss of density and length, I can’t really style my hair the same way anymore, so my hairline is way much more exposed than before.

That’s honestly the hardest part for me. The hairline itself doesn’t seem to have moved at all, but because I’ve lost so much density and length in such a short period of time, my overall appearance has changed dramatically. It’s very similar to how my hair looked about two years ago, despite being on finasteride and minoxidil for years.
