24M with crown thinning and oily scalp - shampoo recommendations and whether to start minoxidil again?

I want to finally start taking proper care of my hair. From the front my hair looks like it has good volume, but that’s mostly because my hair is straight and spreads out. Under direct light or from the crown, it’s clear that I have thinning around the crown area.

A bit of background:

  • My hair has always been a little thin since childhood.

  • On my mom’s side, most male relatives have crown baldness, so I suspect genetics.

  • I don’t notice heavy hair fall, but the density at the crown is definitely lower.

  • When I was around 18, I visited a dermatologist, and she explained hair miniaturisation to me.

  • She prescribed minoxidil, which I used for about 2 months, but I stopped because I really dislike applying oils and my scalp is already very oily.

Right now my biggest issue is oily scalp: If I skip washing for even one day, my hair becomes very greasy and when I comb it, it just falls flat and heavy instead of holding the direction or style I comb it in. The strands stick together and when light hits my scalp it makes my hair look very thin and my scalp gets visible. Because of this I’ve been washing my hair daily since my teenage years.

Until now I’ve used random shampoos like L’Oréal Total Repair, without really researching ingredients.

Now I want to build a proper hair care routine.

My questions:

  1. What daily shampoo would you recommend for an oily scalp?

  2. Should I restart minoxidil, or try something like WishCare Hair Growth Serum? Not sure if my case is androgenetic alopecia, but it does look similar to crown thinning.

  3. Is daily shampooing okay for oily scalp types? If not, then how do I avoid greasy hair?

For daily shampoo, try ketoconazole to help with oil control and potential hair benefits. Restarting min is a good idea if you’re dealing with AGA - it’s the fertilizer. Daily washing is fine for oily scalps; just use gentle shampoos. Check out more detailed info in The Beginner’s Guide.
