17M with Hair Loss and Thinning After 1 Month of Shampoo Use – Need Advice

I’m a 17-year-old, and I’ve been losing hair for a few years now. It feels like it’s getting worse recently. I have straight hair, and I’m experiencing both hair fall and thinning. I’m not sure what my scalp type is, but it itches sometimes. Every time I run my hand through my hair, I notice 3–4 strands coming out, and I also lose hair while just lying down or even sleeping.

I neglected my hair for about 3 years no oil, no shampoo, nothing, just water. Recently, I started shampooing and conditioning twice a week and have been doing it for about a month, but it hasn’t helped. In fact, it seems worse now since I notice more hair fall during shampooing. I let my hair air-dry naturally (just sit and let it dry).

I’m pretty sure I eat enough protein and fruits, and I drink enough water. I don’t think I’m very stressed, but my sleep is kind of average.

My dad and grandpa don’t have hair loss, so I don’t think it’s hereditary.

I can’t visit a dermatologist, but I can buy products if needed. I’d be extremely grateful if anyone could help or suggest something that actually works.

You might be dealing with scalp issues like dermatitis, which can cause itching and contribute to hair loss. Try using a ketoconazole shampoo to help with that. If you’re not seeing family hair loss patterns, consider looking into your maternal side as well. It could also be early signs of AGA, even if your dad and grandpa don’t have it. Nutrients like zinc, iron, and vitamin D are worth checking out, as deficiencies can impact hair. Keep consistent with a gentle hair care routine and see if the shedding stabilizes over the next few months. You can find more details in The Beginner’s Guide.
